Before I went to Rockharz 2023 (more on that to come) I spent the previous day in Berlin, and after I spent the afternoon getting various supplies for the festival, I set off to look at some more promising places. First place on my trip was Misfit Bar:

As the name suggested, and as can be seen by the flag in the selfie, this bar had a theme dedicated to the Misfits, although it celebrated other legends of rock too. Music wise it was a mix of hard rock, rockabilly, punk and folk metal, I heard some Feuerschwanz there, a band I was later to see at Rockharz. This place also permits smoking inside, a distant memory to us Brits, which may be a plus or a minus whether you smoke or not, although I know some smokers who hate super smoky environments although it wasn’t too bad here. Also, like a lot of places in Berlin and Germany, this place is cash only, as was everywhere else on my visit.

After a drink here I moved on to Trinkteufel:

The punk ethos of this bar was confirmed when I heard Bad Religion being played (no bad thing!) This venue, which has been around since 1997, was much more slanted towards punk, but loads of metalheads like punk and I am no exception. Besides BR they played a variety of hardcore and ska punk, and the barman had a pretty nifty moustache as well. Highly recommended.

The final stop on my yet again all too brief stay in Berlin was Franken Bar:

This is another punk-orientated bar, playing classic hardcore including a song from Articles of Faith. This also had a great atmosphere, and served great craft beer, and also instead of Moscow Mules they served Kyiv Mules. Good vibe all round.
